Curly Girly is a ukulele-playing, all-girl pop band from Sapporo. I discovered them by pure chance. Walking down the streets of Sapporo, Hokkaido, I saw a lot of bands playing. But of all the bands, there was one that was just amazing. It was their harmonies, set against the ukulele melodies that was like a magical spell that night. My friend and I stopped to watch them, and soon a small crowd had gathered around them. Their songs were like perfect pop gems, and when they were done playing, we traded information in the hopes of getting their tape. When we finally received it in the mail, it became our summertime favorite, and still is.
This was in the summer of 2000. I always wondered what had become of Curly Girly, until I heard from another friend. He said he'd just gone up to Sapporo on a trip, and had discovered the best band on the street there. They played a ukulele! Check them out while they are still around. I'm rooting for them!
