DMBQ

DMBQ was a hard rock/psychedelic band with drummer China (aka Nishiura Mana) also of Shonen Knife.  My introduction to the band came too late however to see them in concert.  In the midst of a U.S. tour, the band was driving through Maryland enroute to New York City for a series of shows when on November 4th, the band was involved in a car accident.  I was hoping to see them the next day.  My friend called me to tell me the news, and that Nishiura had unfortunately passed away in the accident.  The tragic accident was front-page news the next day in Japan.

DMBQ's fiery performances made them a standard of the Tokyo underground scene.  Their music, featured elements of both noise and free improvisation ala the noise scene.  The band was formed circa 1988 in Sapporo.  In1990, the band relocated to Tokyo and engaged in activities, with Guitar Wolf, the Boredoms and their family, Buffalo Daughter, Merzbow, and Violent Onsen Geisha,etc..  The band continued to release albums on a regular basis and in 1999, they moved to a major label, Parco/Columbia.  In 2001, after 3 albums, they released a remix album entitled "Resonated”, featuring old friends Buffalo Daughter, EYE (Boredoms), and more.  The following year, they signed a new record deal with Avex Trax, the largest Japanese major label. They released 2 albums after that.  DMBQ has also performed with many overseas artists, sharing the stage at major rock festivals such as Fuji Rock Festival and Summer Sonic.  They toured the country supporting the likes of J.S.B.X., Fugazi, AxCx, Mudhoney, The Dirtbombs, Bob Log III, and 20 miles.
