MARY'S 9TH CUT

Kyoto based 3-piece was formed in 1996 by songwriter Kamiuchi Masahiro and drummer Toga Takeshi with then vocalist Tomoko.  But Tomoko left the group in 2000 and was replaced by new singer, Izumi Megumi.

The group's sound seems to have changed somewhat with the departure of Tomoko.  The new sound is larger, but seems to be searching for a sure footing.  The band's self-titled debut CD on Sunshine Pop, featured a light and jangley 60s pop sound, with strumming acoustic guitar, and shuffling drums plus organ and piano backing.

However, the newer stuff shows evidence the band has plugged into amps, and with slight distortion, chorus pedal, more muscular drumming, and the more prominent Cardigans-esque vocals of Izumi, the band seems to have thrown off the more shimmering aspects of its sound.  Check out the sound clips on their website, see them live, or watch out for any new CDs to see just how the band continues to develop.
